The Cult of Chex Mix

Party Mix....I just love this stuff.
I'm amazed at how many variations of this snack is now on the market; the corporate Chex Mix Web site gives 13 salty recipes and 24 sweet versions with such names as Chai Crunch and Muddy Buddies. The Chocolate versions are now out.

The recipe I know of uses bacon grease, which is nowhere to be found in the modern recipe. The bacon grease makes all the difference. It's a lot better than the "official recipe" on the Chex Web site, and it's galaxies above the now-popular packaged blends, which according to a General Mills press release is the number one snack mix in convenience stores.

Here's the recipe:

7 cups Rice Chex (7 ounces) 7 cups Wheat Chex (11 ounces) 7 cups Corn Chex (7 ounces) 1 box Cheerios (15 ounces) ( some prefer to soak these in Worcestershire Sauce) 1 package thin pretzels (9 ounces) 1 can Spanish peanuts (12.5 ounces) 1/3 cup bacon grease 1/2 cup margarine 2 tablespoons Tabasco 1 heaping teaspoon chili powder (with salt) (More if you like it spicy)

Mix together the cereals, pretzels and peanuts in a large roasting pan and set aside.

Melt together the bacon grease, margarine and Tabasco and stir into the dry ingredients. Sprinkle on the chili powder and stir again.

Bake in a preheated 200 degrees oven for 2 hours, stirring every 20 minutes. Makes about 50 cups.

I think it's nice that even though we live in one of the best cities in the world for dining out, we are not above getting down with the junk food. Most of us have our weaknesses for comfort food, which is often some kind of trashy or junky food we grew up with, no matter how much we also love a fine meal. Want to make me happy? Just come on with that good ole party mix.

Take Care....Ric
